Pulis plans to involve Gudjohnsen in Stoke’s clash with Villa

    Chelsea
    Stoke City
    Tottenham

Stoke boss Tony Pulis plans to involve new signing Eidur Gudjohnsen either from the bench or in the starting eleven against Aston Villa.

The Iceland striker moved to the Britannia Stadium from Monaco on a one-year deal on summer transfer deadline day.

Gudjohnsen and Pulis have both previously confessed that, having missed pre-season, there is a lack of match fitness and that made the former Bolton, Chelsea, Barcelona and Tottenham player a doubt for the arrival of Villa on 13th September.

"Although Eidur has a bit of catching up to do, he is a fantastic professional," the Stoke boss told his club's official website.

"You have to be to play at the highest level and enjoy the success he has achieved.

"It will depend on the amount of work we can do with him which will determine whether he starts the Villa match or whether we put him on the bench."

Ex-Arsenal No1 Lukic: Wenger has keeper transfer plans all wrong
    Arsenal
    Arsene Wenger
    Barcelona
    Liverpool

Former Arsenal No1 John Lukic says Arsene Wenger's team could be found out after failing to sign a new goalkeeper.

Lukic fears Wenger has his keeper priorities all wrong.

He explained to the Sunday Mirror: “There’s an old saying that you don’t win the championship with a bad goalie. I’m not saying Manuel Almunia is bad – but the really top keepers do win games for you.

“The game fans won’t remember is the home match where the opposition got through once and the goalie made a critical save. That save affects the balance of the game, and could win the three points that make you champions.

“I joined Arsenal in 1983 and left in 1990 when David arrived. So between us we spent around 20 years as the Arsenal goalie. How many keepers have been used since David (Seaman) moved on in 2003?”

Lukic went on: “The pursuit of a veteran like Schwarzer suggests that Arsene does still believe his long-term goalie will emerge from inside the club.

“He’s looking for a short-term fix, with Lukasz Fabianski or Wojciech Szczesny eventually taking over.

“You have to be absolutely convinced that the youngster is good enough to do that.

“Given that Arsenal haven’t won a trophy for five years do you really want to be working on a development programme?

“Personally, I’d look for a goalie in his late twenties with a proven track record and put him straight into the team.

“Pepe Reina at Liverpool is an interesting one. The dust hasn’t settled at Anfield yet and he would be a great capture for Arsenal. He’s in the right age group, knows the Premier League, and has a wealth of experience.

“I’d also look at Inter Milan’s Julio Cesar and Victor Valdes at Barcelona.

“Getting either of them may be a tall order, but you have to check out any potential availability and the status of their contracts.

“The key is for Arsenal to find the best man, get him in their team and nail the position down for years.”

Barcelona must pay Ibra agent €1M-a-year for next four years
    AC Milan
    Barcelona
    Zlatan Ibrahimovic

It's been revealed Barcelona must pay the agent of Zlatan Ibrahimovic €1 million a season for the next four years.

Marca says as part of the deal that took Ibra to Barca last summer, it was agreed Raiola would be paid 10 per cent of the player's €12 million salary.

Even though he joined AC Milan last week, a clause in Ibra's Barca contract stated Raiola would not be paid for the length of the deal only if the player unilaterally broke the agreement.

The wash up is that Raiola will be paid €1 million a year for the next four years by the Spanish champs.

    Zlatan Ibrahimovic

The agent of AC Milan signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic says he turned into a "zombie" at Barcelona.

Mino Raiola managed to get Ibra a move back to Italy with Milan last week.

He said: “At Barcelona, Ibra was about to become a zombie. Pep Guardiola didn’t consider him at all and he had his back against the wall.

“We left because Milan have given that joy back to Zlatan. In all honesty, we don’t know the reasons behind the breakdown of the rapport with Guardiola. That’s the truth.

“All of a sudden the situation changed and at that stage it was crucial to consider a different future.”

Daniel Alves: Ibrahimovic should have fought harder at Barcelona

    Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Daniel Alves says Zlatan Ibrahimovic should have fought harder for a place in Barcelona's team.

Ibra left the club last week for AC Milan.

"Perhaps 'Ibra' lacked patience, maybe he did not fit in our team and our game system and did not wait long enough to adapt," Alves told El Mundo Deportivo.

"He might have been hurt by a situation which he lived, but I saw nothing make him angry. But he has a temper and you have to respect the decisions taken."

     Laporta defends lavish Barcelona spending
    Barcelona

Former Barcelona president Joan Laporta has defended the spending during his reign.

Laporta has been criticised for his lavish spending.

But he said: “I wanted to make life comfortable for the players. We are well aware of everything that was done. They talk about the gifts that we bought players, and the awards they received for winning, but the titles are appreciated.

“It was a matter of respect for the professionals who did a very good job. We tried to make life comfortable for all players, because they earned it.”

Barcelona keeper Valdes has dig: Mourinho will sell a lot of newspapers
    Barcelona
    Jose Mourinho
    Real Madrid

Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes says Jose Mourinho will be good for the media - but whether that will be enough for Real Madrid remains to be seen.

Mourinho is already dominating the Spanish sports media this season.

And Valdes told Cadena COPE: “He will give you much to talk about, and will sell a lot of papers. The press are beginning to know him.

“But the thing that is important is what happens in between. Football is 11 against 11 on the field, and nothing more.”

Valdes also added that, similar to last season, he fully expects Real Madrid to be challenging for the league title until the final day of the season, adding: “Real Madrid have a good team, good players and will fight until the end.

“Barcelona’s philosophy remains to play a positive game, and hopefully the great results will continue. We will see, the season has just started.”

Liverpool icon Thommo: Scrub Mascherano from our history books

    Javier Mascherano
    Everton
    Liverpool

Liverpool icon Phil Thompson wants Javier Mascherano to be "scrubbed from the club's history books"!

In his column for the Liverpool Echo, Thommo wrote: "Mascherano completed his move to Barcelona and the least said about him the better. After he refused to play against City, I don’t want to even remember Mascherano as a Liverpool player. He should be scrubbed from the club’s history books.

"I said last week the club had to stand their ground and ensure he didn’t go on the cheap. By agreeing a deal that could be worth £22million I think they did that. But the way Mascherano conducted himself highlighted everything that’s wrong about some modern day professionals."

Today is a big day for Liverpool, with Anfield to host Everton for Jamie Carragher's testimonial.

Ibrahimovic snubbed Man City as not ready to mount serious challenge for honours
    AC Milan
    Arsenal
    Barcelona
    Manchester United
    Zlatan Ibrahimovic
    Chelsea
    Manchester City

AC Milan new boy Zlatan Ibrahimovic hinted he turned a possible move to Manchester City during the transfer window.

City were reported to be interested in signing the Swede after Barcelona made it clear they were willing to offload the forward.

However, Ibrahimovic has revealed he was not interested in a move to City as he does not feel they are ready yet to challenge for major honours unlike Milan.

"City must fight Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal - sides which took years to build," said Ibrahimovic.

"City are still a side for the future. I chose Milan because they are a team that can win prizes now.

"City can wait for the future but I can't."

Ibrahimovic insists he had no choice but to leave Barcelona after falling out of favour with coach Pep Guardiola.

"The problems began in March. I asked for an explanation, but he did not give it to me," added Ibrahimovic.

"I couldn't take it. I had no choice but to find a new place of work and I was lucky to go to a club like Milan.

"I will soon be 29 years old and cannot afford to lose a year sitting on the bench and watching the weather. I saw what happened last season with Thierry Henry."

Carragher: Mascherano will regret manner of Liverpool exit

    Manchester City

Liverpool veteran Jamie Carragher admits he was disappointed with the behaviour of Javier Mascherano over his move to Barcelona.

Reports suggested that he refused to play in the 3-0 defeat to Manchester City, which would have turned out to be his final game for the Reds.

Mascherano later denied the claims, insisting that he had spoken to manager Roy Hodgson and they both agreed he was not 'right to play'.

Carragher nevertheless believes his former team-mate will have regrets about the way his exit from Liverpool came about.

"Mascherano was great for Liverpool for three or four years and it was a privilege to play with him," said the defender. "But he let himself down badly and that left a bad taste in the mouth.

"If he'd played in that match he would have got a great send-off and it all would have been fine.

"But he ruined that and I think he'll regret it."

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has wrote off Arsenal's Champions League chances.

He listed his own side, Real Madrid, among the potential winners along with Barcelona, Internazionale, Milan, Chelsea, Manchester United and last season's runners-up Bayern Munich.

"One of these will win," he said. "There could be a surprise like Lyon in the semi-finals last season, maybe Roma, Arsenal, Tottenham or Benfica but it's difficult."
