About Peru

Peru's national football team (also known as La Blanquirroja or La Rojiblanca) represents Peru in association football competitions vs. foreign national football teams. The national football team holds its home matches at the national stadium (also known as the Coloso de Jose Díaz) in Lima. The national stadium has a capacity of 45,574 spectators. Peru's national football team also holds matches at the Estadio Garcilaso de la Vega stadium in Cusco and the Estadio Max Augustín stadium in Iquitos as well as some other stadiums this is done because of a controversy over the National Stadium's playing surface. The playing surface at the national stadium is artificial turf. The artificial turf was installed during the preparation for the 2005 FIFA U-17 World Championship in order to improve the stadium's aesthetic appeal.

Peru's national football team has won the Copa America two times; qualified for more than 3 FIFA World Cups and at least two Olympic tournaments. Peru's national football team had inconsistent performance throughout its existence. The last time Peru's national football team participated in the World Cup was in 1982. Since that year, the team failed to achieve any major tournament victory or to participate again in a World Cup competition.

during the 2010 qualification season; Peru's national football team was temporarily suspended from participating in international competitions by FIFA due to allegations of corruption between the government and the Peruvian Football Federation. Peruvian journalists revealed that a series of Peru's most recognized players were seen at nightclubs and parties only days before the team was scheduled to play qualifier matches. Several players were put under investigation while others were banned from playing for the national team.

In November 2008, several Peruvian Football Federation authorities, Peruvian Football League authorities, referees and the national team were suspended by FIFA and banned from participating in international competitions because of allegations of irregularities between the FPF, IPD and the Peruvian government.
