About Genoa CFC
Genoa CFC (AKA simply as Genoa, I Rossoblu [for the kit’s colors], Il Grifone [the griffin], Il Vecchio Balordo [the Old Fool] or officially Genoa Cricket and Football Club) is a professional Italian football team. The club spent most of its history at the Seria A. The football section of the club was founded at 1897 and is one of the oldest clubs in Italy. Genoa FC won the Italian championship 9 times, all of which were in the club’s early years. Genoa won the Coppa Italia (the Italian Cup) once, at 1936-37. Genoa is the fourth most successful Italian club in terms of championships won. Genoa has spent most of its post-war history going up and down between Serie A and Serie B, with few seasons played in Serie C.
The club plays its home games at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris since 1911. Since 1946, the stadium has been shared with local rivals, Sampdoria. The stadium holds a capacity of a little over 35,000 seats.
One of the nicknames of Genoa CFC is Il Grifone which derived from the coat of arms belonging to the city of Genoa. The coat of arms features two golden griffins on either sides of the St George's Cross. One of these Griffins found its way to Genoa CFC badge. Genoa, being a seaport with Genoese communities all over the world, helped the development of fan clubs in cities such as Buenos Aires, Amsterdam, Tokyo, Toronto, New York, San Francisco, and strangely enough, Iceland. The fans of Genoa CFC hold strong rivalry with Sampdoria, the other local club. The two clubs compete in the heated Derby della Lanterna ("Derby of the Lantern, a reference to the lighthouse at the port of Genoa). Genoa's supporters also have a strong distaste for AC Milan, after a clash between opposing supporters in 1995 which resulted in the death of Genoese fan. Genoa CFC News
