About Stade Malherbe Caen
SM Caen (also known as Stade Malherbe Caen or Stade Malherbe Caen Calvados Basse-Normandie) is a professional French football team which competes in the highest division of French football; Ligue 1. SM Caen holds its home matches at the Stade Michel d'Ornano stadium which has room for 21,500 spectators.
SM Caen was founded in 1913 and during most of its history played as an amateur team. It was only in the late 1980s when the team began climbing up towards the top division.
In 1985, SM Caen turned professional and in just three seasons achieved promotion to the first division for the first time in its history. Despite financial difficulties, SM Caen managed to narrowly avoid relegation, finish in the 5th place of the first division and also qualified for the first round of the 1992/93 UEFA Cup in which it was eliminated by Real Zaragoza. Two years later, SM Caen was relegated to the second division and despite winning the title in the first season, the following seasons brought very little success for the team.
During the 2000s, SM Caen managed to reach and play for several seasons in Ligue 1. The team finished the 2003/04 season in the 2nd place in Ligue 2 and was promoted to Ligue 1 where SM Caen remained for one season only before being relegated back to Ligue 2.
SM Caen achieved another promotion to Ligue 1 in the 2007/08 season and was relegated back after playing in Ligue 1 for only one season to play the 2009/10 season in Ligue 2. The bouncing continued and SM Caen will compete in Ligue 1 again in the 2010/11 season. Stade Malherbe Caen
