About UC Sampdoria
U.C. Sampdoria (AKA Sampdoria, blucerchiati (ringed in blue), or officially Unione Calcio Sampdoria) is a professional football club based in Genoa, Italy. Sampdoria football club spent most of its history at the Seria A with short periods of absence from the top Italian league. The club was a merger between two local clubs Sampierdarenese and Andrea Doria. Both the team name and kit reflects this merger from 1946. The name is a combination of the former names and the badge and kit incorporates the former teams' colors (blue-white and red-black) in a single stripped design. The badge also has a profile of a sailor in black, known as “John-Baptist”. Sampdoria won the Italian championship once, the Coppa Italia (Italian Cup) 4 times and the Super Cup once in 1991.
Internationally, the club’s major success so far was winning the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup at the 1989-90 season. Another achievement that did not end in victory - Sampdoria reached the European Cup final in 1992 only to lose to FC Barcelona with a 1-0 score after extra time.
Sampdoria play at Stadio Luigi Ferraris, which it shares with Genoa's other football club and bitter rival, C.F.C. Genoa. The Two local rival clubs from Genoa play a derby that is commonly known as the Derby della Lanterna (Derby of the Lantern, a reference to the lighthouse at the city’s port). The stadium holds a capacity of a little over 35,000 seats. Sampdoria Ultras usually occupy the southern stand, Gradinata Sud. The biggest group is Ultras Tito Cucchiaroni, named after an Argentinian left winger who played for Sampdoria. The group was founded in 1969, making it one of the oldest ultra groups in Italy.
