About SL Benfica

SL Benefica (also known as Benfica Lisbon, Sport Lisboa e Benfica, Aguias, Encarnados, O Glorioso, Lampioes, Diabos Vermelhos, SLB or Benefica) is a professional football club based in Lisbon, Portugal. The SL Benefica club is actually the football department of multi-sports club of the same name. SL Benefica football club was founded in 1904 and was one of the founding membersof the Portuguese Liga in 1933. SL Benefica have never been relegated from the First Division of Portuguese football.

In the 1972/73 season, SL Benefica had excellent performance and by ending the whole season without a single defeat, SL Benefica became the only club in Portugal's history to do so. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, SL Benefica had several problems but has quickly recovered and got back on track in the 1983 and 1984 seasons. In 1987, the club won another double (Portuguese cup and championship) for the 9th time in its history. Between 1989 and 1994, SL Benefica won 3 championships and 1 Portuguese Cup.

Between 1994 and 2003 SL Benefica experienced several financial problems which affected the team performance and resulted embarrassing lack of achievements because of under-performing players.

In 2004, SL benefica began regaining its previous performance and won its first Portuguese Cup title in 8 years, Benefica also won its first national championship in 11 years. In the 2005/06 season, SL Benfica won the Portuguese SuperCup for the 4th time and reached the Champions League quarter-finals. In the following 2006/07 season, the club faced Manchester United in a decisive Champions League group match but was eventually defeated and did not advance.

In the 2009/10 season, SL Benefica achieved great results and the club reached the UEFA Europa League Quarterfinals but was defeated in Liverpool's Anfield Stadium.
