Panathinaikos FC (also known as Trifylli ) is a professional Greek football club based in Athens and plays in the Greece Super League. Panathinaikos FC was founded in 1908 and is one of the oldest football clubs in Greece; the club won more than 15 Greek Cups and its home matches are held at the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium.

Panathinaikos FC played in the national leagues until becoming European Cup finalist in 1971. After the establishment of professional football in Greece in 1979, Panathinaikos won 4 Greek Cups, 2 Greek championships; reached the European Cup semifinals and in 1988, the team won its first Greek Super Cup.

In the 1990s, Panathinaikos FC improved and became more successful in both national and international fields. In 1996, the club reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals but was beaten in a second leg match.

In 2000, Panathinaikos was successful in Europe but totally failed in the national league and remained without a title. After some managerial changes, the club reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League but was eliminated by FC Barcelona. In the 2002/03 season, Panathinaikos reached the UEFA Cup quarter-finals before being eliminated by Porto.

Double in season 2003-04, Panathinaikos managed to win the Double after almost a decade but in the following seasons the team could not win any titles despite its hard struggle. In the 2007/08 season, thanks to very good achievements in the Super League's play-offs which Panathinaikos won; the team managed to secure its participation in the next year's Champions League. In the 2008/09 season, Panathinaikos bought many players and advanced to the round of sixteen in the Champions League.

The following 2009/10 season was much better for Panathinaikos who won the Greek Championship, Greek Cup and the final 16 of Europa League.
