About Athletic Club Bilbao

Athletic Bilbao (also known as Athletic Club and Los Leones {The lions}) is a popular football club from Bilbao, Spain. Athletic Bilbao was founded in 1928 and played in the Spanish La Liga (Primera Division) since then. Athletic Bilbao has won the La Liga more than 7 times.

Athletic Bilbao club members are also called the Lions (Los Leones) because the Athletic Bilbao stadium was built near an old church named Saint Mammes after an early Christian which the Romans throw to the lions who refused to eat him and therefore he became to be known as a saint.

Athletic Bilbao players wear red uniforms with white stripes. Athletic Bilbao was one of the last major clubs which didn’t have any official sponsorship on their kit, it was only in the 2004/05 season when the club kit had an official sponsorship logo on it in exchange to hundreds of thousands of euros. Since 2008 Athletic Bilbao received more than 2,000,000 euros in exchange to being sponsored by a big oil company.

Athletic Bilbao had many ups and downs since it was established in 1928. in the 80's (in 1981) Athletic Bilbao had Javier Clemente as its new manager. Clemente has managed to assemble together good players and create one of the most successful Athletic Bilbao teams in the club's history. In the first season in charge Clemente led the team to the 4th place in the La Liga. In 1983, Athletic Bilbao won the La Liga and in 1984 Athletic Bilbao won the La Liga/ Copa Del Rev double.

In 1985, Athletic Bilbao won the 3rd place of La Liga; In 1986 Athletic Bilbao won the 4th place of La Liga. After Clemente has left the team, Athletic Bilbao has failed to win a major trophy. Athletic Bilbao has replced quite a few managers and eventually even managed to return Clemente as its manager but even Clemente did not succeed in restoring the team success.

It was only in 1996 when Luis Fernandez and managed to lead Athletic Bilbao to their second La Liga and qualified to the UEFA Champions League and have been quite successful since.
