About Standard de Liege

Standard Liege (also known as Standard de Liege, Royal Standard de Liege or Les Rouches) is a professional Belgian football club based in the city of Liege; Standard Liege is one of the most successful and most popular clubs in Belgium. The club was established in 1898 by a group of high school students; in 1954, Standard Liege won its first Belgian Cups and 4 years later, the club was crowned as the national champion for the first time and therefore qualified for taking part in the European Cup of the following season for the first time.

Standard Liege was quite successful over the years and won quite a few national titles. In 1982, Standard reached the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup but was defeated by FC Barcelona in the final. Two years later in 1984, Standard Liege was involved in a scandal and had to pay a heavy fine. Being unable to pay the fine, Standard Liege had to sell its key players and as a result, go through an extremely long dry period of poor performance in the two following decades.

Standard Liege experienced a long period without major winnings (excluding the National Cup win in 1993) nor Belgian titles. It was only in the 2005/06 season when the club was saved from bankruptcy.by a French businessman. Standard Liege finished that season in the second place and securing the club a place in the Champions League qualifiers.

In 2008, Standard Liege won its first Belgian League title in 25 years and made their second appearance in the Champions League qualifiers in the 2008/09 season.

The 2009/10 season was good for Standard Liege in Europe not that good within the national league. Standrad finished that season in the 9th place and therefore will not take part in European football in the 2010/11 season.
