About Valenciennes FC
Valenciennes (also known as Valenciennes Football Club, Valenciennes FC or as USVA) is a professional French football based in Valenciennes in north France. Valenciennes FC was founded in 1913 and three years later was renamed to Union Sportive Valenciennes-Anzin (USVA). During most of the club existence, Valenciennes was not an outstanding club and therefore didn't attract any exceptional attention.
In 1993, Valenciennes was involved in a scandal regarding a fixing of a match when Bernard Tapie who was Marseille's chairman at the time, was suspected to bribe Valenciennes team players in order to ensure a win for Marseille; such win would enable Marseille football club to have more time to prepare for the UEFA Champions League final. This scandal eventually caused the forced relegation of both Valenciennes and Marseille. Valenciennes was indeed relegated to Division 3 because of that incident.
In 1996, Valenciennes was renamed as "Valenciennes Football Club" after the renaming in 1916 to "Union Sportive Valenciennes-Anzin (USVA)". In 2005, Valenciennes was promoted to Ligue 2 (Division 2) and after performing well during that season, Valenciennes was promoted back to Ligue 1 (Division 1) after more than a decade and managed to stay there.
