About Olympique de Marseille
Olympique de Marseille (aka OM) is a top French football club based in the southern city Marseille. Olympique de Marseille was founded as a rugby club at 1892 (then referred to as “football”). At 1899 a soccer team was founded. Olympique de Marseille plays in Ligue 1 (where the club was for most of its history) in the top tier of French football. The successful club holds several French records: the only French team ever to have won the UEFA Champions League, in 1993 (The star in the club’s badge was added to mark this achievement). OM holds another record of French Cup titles. Olympique de Marseille was the champions of France over 10 times.
In 1994, Olympique de Marseille was involved in a bribery scandal which caused its relegation and cost the club its 1993 championship title, thus breaking a 5 years succession of victories. The club’s fans would wait until the 2009-10 season, to finally get another French championship.
The club has a huge, loyal body of fans, divided to several fan clubs, each with its own territory at the OM stadium, Stade Vélodrome. The stadium holds 60k seats and the two curves the North and the South are dominated by the regular fans. The away section is located in the North stand and is separated by a very high fence from the fanatic OM supporters. Although the stadium underwent several improvements, the fans still hope it will be covered and additional stands will be constructed to meet the demand for more seats.
Olympique de Marseille and Paris Saint Germain (OM-PSG) holds the match that is known in France as Le Classique, (named after the Spanish El Clásico between Barcelona FC and Real Madrid). Like all major rivalries in football, the antipathy between Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille represents more. It has a historical, cultural and social meaning: the capital against the periphery and North vs. South. Olympique de Marseille News
