About Lens
RC Lens (also known as Racing Club de Lens or sang et or) is a professional French football club based in Lens, France and plays in France's top football league; Ligue 1. RC Lens was founded in 1906 as a teenager's team and with time became more organized and officially registered. Until the 1970s, the team played in various minor leagues; in 1972, RC Lens reached the French Cup semi-finals and the 1st Division ; 3 years later, in 1975. RC Lens made it to the Final of the French Cup but was eliminated by AS Saint-Étienne. However, as a finalist of the French Cup, RC Lens was entitled to participate in the UEFA Cup Winners Cup for the first time in its history but was knocked out quite early but this didn't stop Lens from continuing to progress.
In the following season, RC Lens has finished in the 2nd place and therefore qualified for the UEFA Cup; after several winnings, Lens was eliminated and eventually relegated to the Second Division for the 1978 season. The relegation didn't last long and RC Lens returned to the First Division for the 1979 season.
In both 1993 and 1994, RC Lens qualified for the UEFA Cup twice in a row and also reached the French Cup semi final. In 1998, RC Lens became French Champion, League Cup semi-finalist and finalist of the French Cup. Lens won its 2nd major title in the following year at the League Cup and became the only team to beat Arsenal in Wembley.
RC Lens reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup in the following season before being eliminated by Arsenal. In the 2002/03 season, the team finished at the second place and qualified for its 2nd UEFA Champions League. In 2004 and 2005, RC Lens finished at the 8th place of the table.
In 2008, RC Lens finished at the 18th place and was relegated down to Ligue 2. Despite Lens's slow start in Ligue 2, the team got back on track, finished the season as champion and returned to the First Division in 2009. Lens News
