Olympique Lyonnais (also known as Lyon, OL, Les Gones or Olympique Lyon) is a professional French football club based in Lyon and plays in France's Ligue 1, the top French football division. Lyon's home matches are held at the Stade de Gerland stadium where 41,044 spectators can attend the matches.
Olympique Lyon is one of the most popular football clubs in France and in 2009, Lyon was the richest club in the country having generated an annual revenue stream of nearly €140,000,000.
Olympique Lyon was nationally established as a club in 1950 and in just two years, the team was crowned champions of the second division and moved up to the first division where the team played for the rest of the decade. Until 2002, Lyon achieved moderate success. With the beginning of the new millennium, Olympique Lyon achieved greater success and won many trophies and titles.
In 2002, Olympique Lyon has finally won its first ever Ligue 1 championship, this winning was followed by a record-breaking streak of seven successive titles. Lyon's success was much better than that. Lyon also won more than 3 Coupe de France titles, more than 6 Trophee des Champions and 3 Ligue 2 Championships as well as appearing in the UEFA Champions League more than 10 times.
In the 2009/10 season, the team advanced through to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals for the first time after previous attempts which ended at the quarter-final. Lyon News
