About VfL Wolfsburg

VfL Wolfsburg (also known as Wolfsburg FC, Verein für Leibesubungen Wolfsburg-Fußball GmbH) is a professional German football club based in Wolfsburg, Germany. VfL Wolfsburg was founded in 1938 out of a sport club for the Volkswagen Group (German vehicle manufacturer) which is the owner of the team.

They have won the Bundesliga once in their history, in the 2008–09 season, and were DFB-Pokal runners-up in 1995. The club grew out of a multi-sports club for Volkswagen workers in the city of Wolfsburg and is 100% owned by Volkswagen Group.

VfL Wolfsburg reached the promotion round playoffs for the Bundesliga in 1970 after finishing in the second place of the Second Division in 1970 but the because of the team's poor performance it was unable to advance. VfL Wolfsburg continued to play in the Third Division and amateur league until achieving promotion to the Second Division for the 1992/93 season.

VfL Wolfsburg continued to improve its performance and become more successful through the 90's and eventually advanced to the German Cup Final in 1995 and later on reached the top flight for the 1998/99 season. Despite the skeptical predictions that VfL Wolfsburg will be shortly relegated back, the team has secured itself as a mid-table team and eventually qualified to the UEFA Cup. VfL Wolfsburg also qualified for the Intertoto Cup in 2000 and from 2001 to 2005. The team has narrowly avoided relegation with two 15th place finishes in the 2005/06 and 2006/07 seasons.

Following the bad performance of the team, a new manager was hired and the team performance was greatly improved. VfL Wolfsburg finished the 2007/08 season at the 5th place, the highest club finish until then; VfL Wolfsburg has also qualified for the UEFA Cup in that season for the second time in the club's history.

In the following 2008/09 season, VfL Wolfsburg achieved the team's first Bundesliga winning and qualified for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in team's history. In the 2009/10 season, VfL Wolfsburg qualified for the round of 32 phase of the UEFA Europa League and later beaten in the quarter finals.
