About VfB Stuttgart
VfB Stuttgart (also known as Verein für Bewegungsspiele Stuttgart 1893 e. V.) is a professional German football club based in Stuttgart. VfB Stuttgart was founded in 1912 from the merging of 2 school pupils clubs. The team home matches are held at the Mercedes-Benz Arena. VfB Stuttgart's consistently good play throughout the 1950s earned the club's place among the sixteen clubs that would form the original Bundesliga.
In the 1972/73 season, VfB Stuttgart qualified for the UEFA Cup for the first time and advanced to the semi-finals stage of the 1974 tournament where the team was eliminated by eventual winners. At the end of the 1974/75 season, VfB Stuttgart was relegated to the Second Division and its first season in the Second Division ended in ranking at the 11th place.
New coach and players were hired to remedy the team's low achievements and VfB Stuttgart has climbed back up the the Bundesliga after a couple of seasons. In 1980 VfB Stuttgart made another UEFA Cup semi-final appearance in 1980 after achieving several top four finishes on the team's way to its first Bundesliga title in 1984.
In 1991/92 season, VfB Stuttgart won its fourth Bundesliga title on a goal difference but had been eliminated from UEFA Cup play that season after losing the second round match to Osasuna. As national champions, VfB Stuttgart qualified to play in the next season's UEFA Champions League but was eliminated in the first round after a tie-breaking third match. It was only in 1997 when VfB Stuttgart qualified for the 1998 European Cup Winners' Cup final after winning the its third German Cup.
In the following seasons, the team's performance fell down and VfB Stuttgart achieved only mid-table positions, the lack of results and the growing team debts led to the resignation of the VfB Stuttgart's president. With a new president and starting 2001, also a new coach; VfB Stuttgart's performance got better and the team finished as Bundesliga runners-up in the 2002/03 season.
VfB Stuttgart continued to perform as one of the top teams in the country and achieved 4th and 5th place Bundesliga finishes as well as taking part in the UEFA Cup but without much success.
The 2005/06 season was very disappointing as the team performance fell down, VfB Stuttgart achieved a 9th place finish and thus did not qualify for European competition for the first time in four years. In the following season, VfB Stuttgart secured its spot in the 2007/08 UEFA Champions League and also won the team's first Bundesliga title in 15 years.
The 2008/09 season beginning seemed very unpromising, just like the previous one but towards the end of the season, the team's performance has improved and it ended up in the 3rd place.
In the 2009/10 season VfB Stuttgart returned to the Champions League for the third time in six years and achieved qualifying for the round of the last 16 but was eventually eliminated by losing to FC Barcelona at the Camp Nou. VfB Stuttgart News
