About Manchester City
Manchester City Football Club (also known as Manchester City F.C.) is an English Premier League football club, the team plays its home matches at the City of Manchester Stadium.
Manchester City was founded in 1880 by the St. Mark's Church. In 1887, after moving to Hyde Road in Ardwick; the club was renamed to Ardwick Association Football Club to reflect the club's new location. In the 1893–94 season led to reorganization within the club, and Ardwick were reformed as Manchester City Football Club in 1894.
The current Manchester City club crest was adopted in 1997 after realizing the previous crest is ineligible for registration as a trademark. The crest is based on the arms of the city of Manchester and consists of a shield in front of a golden eagle.
The period between the late 1960's and early 1970's when Manchester City won the League Championship, the FA Cup, the League Cup and European Cup Winners' Cup was the club's most successful period was. Since Manchester United won the League Cup in 1976, the club has failed to win any major honors. Manchester City's decline led to relegation twice in three years in the 1990' and eventually spent the 1998–1999 season in the third tier of English football. Manchester City has since regained top flight status; in fact, the club spent the majority of its history in top flight status.
Manchester City football club gained it first honors in 1899 when winning the Second Division and being promoted to the First Division. In the 1930's, Manchester City reached two consecutive FA Cup finals and won the First Division title for the first time in 1937. In 1938, Manchester City was relegated despite scoring more goals than any other team in the division.
During the 1960's and 1970's Manchester City FC was very successful but during the 1980's Manchester City had a long period of decline. During this period, the club had hard time to reach and stay in the top flight. It was in 1998 when Manchester City became the first former winner of a European trophy to be relegated to the third tier of their domestic league.
After relegation, Manchester City has been promoted and relegated several more times until eventually winning the 2001–2002 Division One championship while breaking club records for the number of points gained and goals scored in a season.
In the 2003 close season, Manchester City moved to the new City of Manchester Stadium in which the first four seasons resulted in mid-table finishes. In 2008, Manchester City club was purchased by Abu Dhabi United Group and shortly afterwards broke the British transfer record by signing Brazilian international Robinho from Real Madrid for 32.5 million GBP. Manchester City finished in the 10th place and also reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup. In 2009, Manchester City took transfer spending to an unprecedented level of more than 100 million pounds on players. Manchester City finished the 2009-2010 season in the 5th position in the Premier League and ensured its place in the 2010-2011 Europa League season. Manchester City News
