The Netherlands national football team (also known as Clockwork Orange, Holland, The Dutch Eleven, Oranje and the Flying Dutchmen) represents the Netherlands in association football competitions vs. foreign national football teams. The national football team holds its home matches at the Amsterdam Arena, a 52,960 seats stadium in Amsterdam; the De Kuip stadium (also known as Feijenoord Stadion), a 51,177 seats stadium in Rotterdam and at the Philips Stadion Philips, a 35,119 seats in Philipsdorp.
Although the Netherlands national football team is one of the strongest football teams ever in the world, the team holds the record for losing the most FIFA World Cup finals without ever winning the tournament. During the 1970's, the most successful decade of the team in which it has qualified for two FIFA World Cup finals yet the team came back home without the trophy. During the 1980's the team has achieved less success and failed to qualify for the 1982 World Cup, Euro 1984 and the 1986 FIFA World Cup. However, the team has managed to qualify for the UEFA Euro 1988.
In the 1988 UEFA Euro tournament, Netherlands national football team advanced all the way to the semi final and after defeating West Germany in the 89th minute, the team has advanced to the final in which it defeated the USSR and won the championship. This was the team's first major tournament win which helped it to return to the higher level of international football. However, despite the recent success and high expectations; the team failed to reproduce the same success in the following 1990 FIFA World Cup, 1992 UEFA Euro and the 1990 FIFA World Cup tournament.
The Netherlands national football team was the first European team to qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the first team to qualify for the Round of 16 in that tournament.the team has advanced all the way to the final match for the third time but eventually Spain managed to defeat the third-time finalists.
