About Summer Football

The friendly matches (also known as exhibition games, exhibition matches, preparation match, friendlies and pre-season friendlies) are football matches held between various football teams during the off-season period. The friendly football matches are not part of the UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) league competitions and therefore have no competitive value, no prizes and no effect on any of the teams rankings in any official UEFA competition.

The friendly matches are held between the end of the previous UEFA's football season and the beginning of the new season. These games help the players to warm up for the new season, familiarize teammates with each other and also help teams decide which players to keep for the regular season competition.

Although the friendly matches are considered as non-competitive and are usually arranged by the football clubs themselves; there are teams that do compete in short-term football tournaments during the off-season such as the Amsterdam Tournament, Teresa Herrera Trophy and the Emirates Cup. Unlike the regular friendly matches, the short-term tournaments may involve winning prizes or titles which have no effect on the teams ranking in its domestic league.

Besides the football clubs, national teams also play friendly matches. These are usually held when the teams need to prepare for major tournaments. These matches also help the national teams managers and coaches to assess the abilities of players and decide which players to select for the tournament squad.
