About UEFA Europa League

The Europa League (also known as UEFA Europa League and formerly known as the UEFA Cup) is an annual football cup competition for football clubs in Europe. The Europa League is the second most prestigious European football competition after the UEFA Champions League. The qualifying of football teams for the Europa league competition depends on their performance and achievements in their national leagues and cup competitions.

Europa League winners keep the trophy for a year before returning it to UEFA. However, after the trophy is returned, the winning club is allowed to keep a 4/5 scale replica of the original trophy. UEFA regulations state that the original trophy would be awarded to any team upon winning the Europa League cup 3 times in a row or upon winning the tournament for five times.

Football associations which are ranked between the 7th and the 9th places in the UEFA coefficients are entitled to send the national cup winner and three other teams to the UEFA Europa League qualification. All other national football associations are entitled to send the national cup winner and two other teams with the exception of Liechtenstein, Andorra and San Marino which will only send the national cup winner.

In addition, 15 of the teams which lose in the Champions League qualification round three will participate in the fourth Europa League qualification round. 10 losing teams from the Champions League qualification round 4 will directly enter the UEFA Europa League group stage.

As a commercial entity, UEFA awards the teams which compete in the Europa League tournament with prize money. The amount of the prize received by the teams consists of a fixed payments based on its participation and results plus a variable amount that depend of the value of its TV market
