About French League Ligue 1 is the top division of the professional football league in France and one of the popular professional football leagues across Europe. Ligue 1 also acts as the top division of the French football league system. Ligue 1 consists of 20 clubs and operates on the same promotion and relegation basis as the football league. Throughout the football season, each club plays twice against the other clubs for a total of 38 matches. At the end of each season, the three lowest placed teams are relegated to Ligue 2 while the top three teams in Ligue 2 are promoted and replace them. Ligue 1 season begins in August and ends in May; most of the 380 Ligue 1 matches are played on Saturdays and Sundays; however, occasionally some matches are held during weekday evenings. Ligue 1 was formed in 1932 and by its formation, turned the football in French into professional football. In order to create a successful professional football league in France, the number of member clubs in Ligue 1 was limited to twenty clubs and each member club had to meet the French football federation criteria. The first 20 club members of Ligue 1 were Antibes, CA Paris, Cannes, Club Français, Excelsior AC Roubaix, Fives, Hyeres, Marseille, Metz, Mulhouse, Nice, Nimes, Olympique Ales, Olympique Lillois, Racing Club de France, Red Star Olympique, Rennes, Sochaux, Sete and SO Montpellier. Each season, the top two teams in Ligue 1 qualify for the UEFA Champions League's group phase, the team in the third place enters the final qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League. The team in the fourth place of the Ligue 1 table qualifies for the UEFA Europa League.
