Man City striker Adebayor takes fresh aim at Arsenal
Arsenal
Emmanuel Adebayor
Manchester City
Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor has made a new taunt at former club Arsenal.
Adebayor reckons a good run in the Premier League will confirm that they are leaving the Gunners in the shade – even though he spoke about leaving City towards the end of the transfer window.
When asked if he felt like he was playing for a bigger club than Arsenal, Adebayor replied: “Yeah, it does feel like that.
“With the great new players we’ve got we have a wonderful chance to make history.
“But it’s all about results. If we can win ten games in a row, people will class Manchester City as bigger than Arsenal.”

Chelsea attempted deadline day move for AC Milan signing Robinho
AC Milan
Real Madrid

Chelsea
Manchester City
Chelsea made a late bid for AC Milan signing Robinho, it has been revealed.
The Sunday Mirror says Chelsea made a cheeky bid for Manchester City’s unwanted winger Robinho before the transfer window closed.
The Blues offered to take the Brazilian on loan to Stamford Bridge providing City subsidised some of his reported £160,000 a week pay packet.
Chelsea were on the brink of signing Robinho from Real Madrid two years ago. He stunned them by preferring to move to City in a British record £32.5 million deal.
A senior Chelsea source said last night: “We did make an initial enquiry about Robinho but for some reason City didn’t want to do business with us and thought the offer we tabled was unacceptable.”

Stoke legend Banks: Man City No1 Hart can be England keeper for next 20 years
Manchester City
Stoke City
World Cup
Stoke City and England legend Gordon Banks says Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart can be England's No1 for the next 20 years.
He tipped Hart for stardom before the World Cup in South Africa and believes England now have a goalkeeper they can bank on for decades.
“He has all the attributes, and if England groom him well for the role he could be their goalkeeper for 20 years,” said Banks.
It is an endorsement that has the keeper, who made several crucial saves against Bulgaria on Friday, pinching himself.
“I’d like to follow Gordon Banks, but they are massive shoes to step into,” he said.
“For him to even mention my name is a great honour.
“To be honest, when I started at Shrewsbury I didn’t really think I was good enough. But the opportunities that are coming now are so exciting, so I’m trying to embrace them and do the best I can.”

Adebayor: Man City going for top three finish
David Silva
Emmanuel Adebayor
Manchester City
Emmanuel Adebayor says a top three finish is a must for Manchester City.
After missing out on Champions League football to Spurs last term, he is determined to burst into the top three this time around.
“This season we’ve got better players like David Silva and Yaya Toure,” he told FHM magazine. “We’re a better team but now we have to prove it.
“We have to work on the winning mentality and add that spirit to the squad.
“We can finish in the top three – that’s our belief now.”

Man City striker Adebayor stands by controversial Arsenal goal celebrations
Arsenal
Emmanuel Adebayor
Robin Van Persie
Manchester City
Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor has defended his controversial goal celebrations against Arsenal last season.
Adebayor, 26, is in the bad books with many Arsenal fans following his infamous length-of-the-field goal celebration when he scored against the Gunners last season.
He apologised but was banned for three games after being found guilty of violent conduct for kicking former team-mate Robin van Persie in the face.
The celebration brought a £25,000 fine and a suspended two-match ban.
However, in an interview for the October edition of FHM magazine, there is little in the way of an apology.
He just says he was giving City fans what they wanted and they love him for it.
“It’s because I showed the fans my hunger, passion and I showed my love for the club,” he said. "Ultimately, the fans just want to see that and feel it inside their bodies.”

England coach Clemence heaps praise on Man City No1 Hart
Manchester City
Tottenham
England goalkeeper coach Ray Clemence was delighted with the performance of Joe Hart in victory over Bulgaria.
The Manchester City goalkeeper is fast emerging as the country's outstanding No1.
Clemence said: "When it was needed against Bulgaria, he pulled off three or four excellent saves which influenced the game and that is what top international keepers do.
"He has come in, looked comfortable and done what international keepers do. They may not have lots to do but, when called upon, they make the saves that matter, particularly the one where straight off the back of it we scored the second goal.
"I’m not going to put any pressure on him. Joe is a young lad who has just come into the side, this is his fifth international and in each one he has looked more comfortable, as though to say "I can cope with this, I’ll deal with it" — and he has done.
"I saw his performance for Manchester City at Tottenham a few weeks ago and it was a bit special.
"He looks difficult to beat for opposing forwards and he feels he is very difficult to beat. And he is just as keen on the training ground as on the pitch."

Lazio coach Reja blocked deal for Man City striker Santa Cruz
Manchester City striker Roque Santa Cruz would be a Lazio player if not for coach Edy Reja.
Santa Cruz, 29, and City were then victims of a Lazio smear campaign.
A Lazio source told the Mail on Sunday: "(Fabio) Capello’s friend Edy Reja got cold feet and decided he had too many strikers already with Mauro Zarate, Sergio Floccari, Pasquale Foggia and Tommaso Rocchi all available.
"Lazio didn’t want to anger their own fans so they deliberately starting leaking a story that City and Santa Cruz were asking too much money from their point of view.
"But the real reason the move broke down wasn’t the money, it was all about Edy Reja changing his mind."

Chelsea starlet Sturridge: Bad press has upset me
Chelsea striker Danny Sturridge admits bad press has hurt him.
The Chelsea training ground talk is of a decent lad who has electric pace and has benefited from his time at the club since arriving from Manchester City.
And the 21-year-old is getting the message.
He said: "The bad press I’ve had has made me think I just have to get my head down and not worry about the talk.
"It hurts to hear people saying that City let me go because I was big-headed and wanted the money. I left to win trophies and we won the Double last season.
"I have no regrets at all."

Gelson only has good memories of Man City
Switzerland midfielder Gelson Fernandes has great memories about his time with Manchester City.
Fernandes, who joined Serie A club Chievo last week, loved his two years at City up to 2007, learning the language in six months and meeting his future wife in Manchester.
"I had some good memories at City," he said.
"Joe and Micah were my guys. Micah is a fantastic defender, strong and fast. I thought people were messing when they told me he is no longer with England.
"As for that Spain victory, it was incredible, but it happened because it was something we believed in.
"The Swiss public will look at that result and think we can beat England too. We must take confidence and encouragement from that game."

Sturridge: Chelsea move taught me to be professional
Nicolas Anelka
Chelsea
Manchester City
Chelsea striker Danny Sturridge admits he arrived from Manchester City with the profile of a spoilt teenager.
The only criticism of him now is that he could be stronger mentally in his quest to reach the top.
"I have matured in the last year and realised what football is all about," said Sturridge, who is being earmarked as Nicolas Anelka’s long-term successor, to the Mail on Sunday.
"Going to a big club shows you that it is not only about playing, it is about things off the park, too.
"I don’t go out trying to get drunk or anything like that. I don’t think about anything but kicking a ball and trying to get into the Chelsea team."

Switzerland ace Gelson: Spurs midfielder Huddlestone should be in England XI

World Cup
Switzerland midfielder Gelson Fernandes says Tottenham ace Tom Huddlestone should be in the England team.
Fernandes, formerly of Manchester City, is now with Chievo Verona in Italy.
"England had nobody to protect the defenders at the World Cup," he said. "Tom Huddlestone could do it. It surprises me that he’s not in the squad either."

Gelson cannot believe Man City defender Richards not in England squad
John Terry
Rio Ferdinand
Manchester City
Switzerland midfielder Gelson Fernandes can't believe former Manchester City teammate Micah Richards is no longer part of England's squad.
When it comes to the England squad picked by Fabio Capello for the opening double-header of the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign, the 23-year-old midfielder admits to being perplexed.
"Where is Micah Richards?" he asked of his former team-mate at Eastlands.
"Gary Cahill, Joleon Lescott, Phil Jagielka — and no Micah. Oh God, I cannot believe it. I know they have injuries with John Terry, Rio Ferdinand and Michael Dawson. That can only help us."

Man City No1 Hart admits England performance inspired by Leeds keeper Schmeichel
Leeds United
Manchester City
England No1 Joe Hart says he owes his cleansheet against Bulgaria to Leeds United goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.
Hart revealed how former team-mate Schmeichel inspired his match-turning saves during the 4-0 win over Bulgaria last night.
The Manchester City man, who made two crucial stops from Stanislav Angelos and Dimitar Rangelow, said: "I try to stand big. I've stolen [the technique] from Kasper Schmeichel, who I worked with for a bit - and it's working for now. Luckily [the ball] hit me."

Man City and England No1 Hart: I owe it all to Birmingham
Birmingham City
Manchester City
Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart admits his England breakthrough came thanks to Birmingham City.
Hart’s emergence has meant that England owe a debt to an unlikely source – a Scotsman. Birmingham manager Alex McLeish took Hart on loan last season and after an indifferent start, flourished.
“I can’t stress how important that time was,” said Hart. “If I had been sitting on my bum that would have done nothing for anyone – not for Birmingham, not for City and not for me.”

De Jong: Yaya Toure no threat to my Man City future
Nigel de Jong has welcomed the arrival of Manchester City midfield powerhouse Yaya Toure.
Some pundits thought the Ivorian’s arrival would cloud De Jong’s chances.
But the duo are operating in the same midfield and the Dutchman believes their partnership will flourish.
He told the Sunday Mirror: “I see Yaya more as a central midfield player than a defensive midfield player. He has an attacking mind. I think together we can form a great partnership in midfield. It will be like a strong block.
“Besides, I have always been a regular player in the first team and I expect that will stay like that.”
