EDITORIAL: Dalla Valle Fulham move first mistake of Hodgson Liverpool era
Manchester United
Raul
Fernando Torres
Birmingham City
Joe Cole
Steven Gerrard
Fulham
Liverpool
EDITORIAL: Lauri Dalla Valle's departure from Liverpool just doesn't add up.
How can a player likened to Fernando Torres 12 months go, suddenly become a throw-away makeweight in a deal for a 29 year-old fullback?
That cash and Alex Kacaniklic also went in the opposite direction for Paul Konchesky, who was inside the final year of his Fulham contract, makes the Finn's trade even more baffling.
Throw in Hodgson's comments about not knowing enough about Dalla Valle to make an assessment - even though he had been coach of Finland less than four years ago - and this transfer simply doesn't make sense.
It particularly rings true when you consider the quiet and considered overhaul Hodgson has performed on Liverpool's transfer policy since taking over.
Along with Konchesky, Hodgson managed to land this summer's hottest Bosman, Joe Cole, sending the club's website into meltdown as a result. He also secured the commitment of Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres with Europe's biggest clubs circling and outbid Manchester United to bring Raul Meireles to England.
The new manager managed to steer Liverpool into the Europa League group phase with a shadow team and gave an already rejuvenated support a glimpse into the future by introducing youngsters like Raheem Sterling and Jonjo Shelvey in preseason senior action.
It's been an impressive first summer market under Hodgson - which is why allowing Dalla Valle to leave just doesn't jive.
The only doubts about the player have come from Finnish fans, who have emailed tribalfootball.com in recent months about Dalla Valle's apparent decision to commit his international future to the country of his father, Italy. But that still doesn't explain the decision to cut him loose to Fulham.
Reds legend Sami Hyypia welcomed his fellow Finn four years ago, declaring the move to Liverpool "the best he could make".
And upon signing him, former Liverpool academy director Malcolm Elias described Dalla Valle as "an incredible talent". Elias is now in charge of recruitment at Fulham.
A little over a year ago, Steve Claridge, the former Birmingham City striker, said of Dalla Valle: "Everything he does comes naturally. Some things can't be taught – qualities that separate ordinary players from very good ones – and even at his age his positioning in build-up play and knowledge of where to stand when the ball comes into the box seems spot-on.
"Little wonder his signature was coveted by so many big clubs. As a 15-year-old he chose Internazionale but then moved back home to Finland after only a year in Milan. At 17 sometimes the choices you make off the pitch can be as important as the ones you make on it and his decision to go to Liverpool, which looks a perfect match, means he's got both just about right."
So why would Hodgson allow such a talent leave for Fulham on a virtual 'free'? Has his good mate Elias got one over on him?
It smacks of Ron Atkinson rejecting a young Peter Beardsley at Manchester United. United lived to regret that decision throughout the 1980's - and Liverpool could be doing the same for the next ten years.
Ex-Arsenal boss Graham says Wenger needs to get serious about keeper dilemma
Arsenal
Arsene Wenger
Fulham
Former Arsenal boss George Graham says Arsene Wenger needs to get serious about solving his goalkeeping dilemma.
Graham was the Gunners boss who broke the British transfer record for a goalie when signing David Seaman for £1.3million in 1990.
Seaman spent 13 years at Arsenal, a cornerstone of the club’s pursuit of honours, and of the resolute defence Wenger inherited in 1996.
Graham’s policy was to pay for the best and then let him get on with the job.
Wenger spent this summer courting Fulham veteran Mark Schwarzer – but still no deal got done.
Graham told the Sunday Mirror: “Arsene has the money, so why not go and spend £10m or £12m on a real top-quality keeper? I don’t really understand why he has not done that.
“I mean, Schwarzer is 37 and that seems to go against Arsene’s policy of recruiting players of that age.”

Celtic have signed 18 year old Australian keeper Nick Feely.
The youngster spent some time with Celtic in July and Fulham and Reading were also interested in the stopper.
Feely played in the Jock Stein Friendship Cup but must dislodge Robbie Thomson who is ahead of the former Perth Glory stopper in the pecking order.
Youth coach Stevie Frail confirmed: “We won’t rotate the keepers, they’ll play on merit. Robbie has stated our two league games but Nick’s registration has now been completed.
“In Belgium we had a good look at Nick, he played in four matches and Robbie played in three.
“Nick hasn’t played for a few weeks and needs a bit of work on his sharpness but we have got two good young goalkeepers battling for a place.
“We do a lot of work scouting and following up recommendations. We brought Nick over, had a look at him and liked what we saw.”

Birmingham boss McLeish: Agents pushed Dembele to Fulham
AZ Alkmaar
Birmingham City
Sir Alex Ferguson
Fulham
Birmingham City boss Alex McLeish blames agents for missing out on Fulham signing Moussa Dembele.
When it came down to the nitty gritty ahead of the transfer deadline day, the Belgium international threw his lot in with Fulham.
Blues had also agreed a £5 million fee with the Dutch club.
McLeish told the Birmingham Mail: “Dembele was one that we worked on for a long time. We tracked him for over a year. Dick Advocaat was his manager at both the Belgium national team and AZ Alkmaar, I spoke to Dick about him a year ago.
“If it was up to me, if I was doing the negotiations, he would have been signed. Done.
“But there are other circumstances, factors, which make it difficult. We believe the agent had told his father and Dembele that we offered less than we actually did offer. That was why Dembele talked to Fulham. So we don’t know, maybe the agent on the other side of things was getting more money in the other deal.
“It’s little things like that – but I can’t say for sure. It’s a change from my day. I used to go in and negotiate with guys like Sir Alex Ferguson and the chairman myself. There were no agents involved.”

Chris Smalling has revealed Manchester United summer signing Javier Hernandez has been sticking close to Michael Owen.
Smalling has revealed that England international Owen has been giving the 22-year-old tips on how to leave Premier League defenders with twisted blood.
"When we were on our pre-season tour the strikers spent a lot of time working together and were bouncing ideas off each other," said Smalling, a £10m summer signing from Fulham.
"I'm sure Hernandez was learning from Michael, tips like how to run in behind players that is so hard to defend against.
"And he (Hernandez) has been really impressive so far and has looked really sharp."

Fulham No2 Mark Bowen admits they're pleased to have kept Mark Schwarzer.
The goalkeeper was keen to join Arsenal before Tuesday's transfer deadline.
Bowen told givemefootball.com: "Mark spoke to Mark Hughes and we all know there was interest in him but it was only going to be considered if we could get in a goalkeeper of the quality of Mark Schwarzer as a replacement.
"They had a lot of discussions and he (Schwarzer) said how he felt so we looked at the market place but, ultimately, it wasn’t an option for us in the end."

Tottenham
Premier League clubs are queuing for Watford goalkeeper Scott Loach.
Tottenham tried to sign the England Under 21 international in January, but he was not keen to be a bench warmer behind Heurelho Gomes.
And interest from Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham and Everton may also not necessarily translate into first-team opportunities.
However, he told the London Evening Standard: "I'd definitely have a better chance of getting in the England team if I was playing week in, week out in the Premier League.
"That's where you've got to look, though there's not really an opening anywhere at the moment where I would walk into a team.
"I don't find the idea of stepping up daunting, it's exciting. I believe that if I was to get an opportunity to play at a higher level that I'd be able to step in and do a job as I am confident in my own ability."

Liverpool attempted to scupper Sunderland Gyan deal

Sunderland
Liverpool made a deadline day attempt to trump Sunderland for their new signing Asamoah Gyan.
The Reds attempted to make a move for Gyan, who went on to become Sunderland's record transfer fee in the closing hours of the window.
The Rennes striker's move to the Stadium of Light appeared to be stuttering late in the day, and the former Fulham boss reportedly considered out-bidding the Black Cats in his desperate attempts to sign a striker.

Man City keeper Hart: I would have left
Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart admits he would have sought a move away if he'd started the season on the bench.
Shay Given has decided to stay at City and battle for his place despite interest from Fulham in the transfer window.
Hart said: "I just wanted to play. Sitting on the bench just doesn't interest me because of the way I am and the way I enjoy football.
"If Shay was in possession, then I would have looked elsewhere but luckily enough for now I'm playing and I just want to enjoy that.
"But Shay Given is a huge keeper who has done well for years and years and is so well respected that I've got to be on my toes to keep my place and make it my own.
"I can't speak highly enough of the guy.
"I respect him and look up to him in so many ways, not only as a keeper but as a person, a professional, everything about the way he is. I love working with him."

Smalling outshines Man Utd pal Bebe in England U21 triumph
Manchester United
Rio Ferdinand
Fulham
Chris Smalling got one over Manchester United teammate Bebe in last night's 1-0 win for England over their Portugal U21 counterparts.
Only Old Trafford chief Alex Ferguson knows why he paid £7.4million for Bebe. But on this evidence, it already looks like a helluva lot of money, says The Sun.
Yes, he was starved of service yet when he got hold of the ball, the Portugal striker struggled.
It did not help he was being superbly marshalled by Old Trafford pal Smalling.
The former Fulham defender, 20, has more than a bit of Rio Ferdinand about him and as he strolled around, it was like watching the crocked England skipper in action.

Brian McBride has confirmed he will retire at the end of the current MLS season.
The former Fulham and ex-USA international, who now plays in Major League Soccer for Chicago Fire, announced on Friday that he would finish his playing career once the MLS season finishes in November.
The 38-year-old spent four-and-a-half years in the Premier League with Fulham, scoring 40 goals in 153 appearances.
McBride also made 96 appearances for the USA, scoring 30 goals, before retiring from international football after the 2006 World Cup.
World Cup record.
He ranks as the USA's third-highest goalscorer behind Landon Donovan (45) and Eric Wynalda (34), and was the first American to score in more than one World Cup.
Following brief loan spells with Preston and Everton, McBride made a permanent move to England with Fulham in January 2004.
McBride went back to MLS with Chicago in July 2008 and has a total of 78 goals and 51 assists in 11 years with Chicago and Columbus, where he still shares the Crew record for goals scored.

Fulham
Crystal Palace boss George Burley is relieved stopper Julian Speroni is still at the club after Fulham made a deadline-day bid for the Argentinian.
Cottagers boss Mark Hughes wanted to bring in the Eagles shot-stopper, with first-choice keeper Mark Schwarzer linked with a move to Arsenal, but the deal fell through.
"There was an interest but nothing materialised," Burley told the South London Press.
"We've managed to keep hold of Julian, certainly until January at least, which is great.
"He has proven himself to be a fantastic keeper over a number of years and I'm very pleased he's still at the club."
