Bordeaux (also known as Football Club des Girondins de Bordeaux or Bordeaux) is one of the most successful football clubs in France; Bordeaux plays in France's highest football division, Ligue 1. The club won its last Ligue 1 title in the 2008–2009 season. Bordeaux plays its home games in the Stade Chaban Delmas and is currently in negotiations to build a new stadium which will feature more than 40,000 seats. About 10% of the France population supports the Bordeaux football club which is wholly owned by the French television group M6 since 2001.
Since founded in 1881, Bordeaux won more than five Ligue 1 titles as well as several Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue titles. Bordeaux also won more than two Troph?e des champions and had the honor of having appeared in the most finals in the Coupe de la Ligue.
During the 1970's and 1980's, Bordeaux was very successful and won 3 league championships, 2 Coupe de France titles and performed extremely well in European competitions. Bordeaux won the 1983–84 season championship and in the next season, Bordeaux again won the league by 4 points over second place.
In Europe, Bordeaux reached the European Cup semi-finals in the 1984–85 season.
In the Coupe de France, Bordeaux achieved cup glory in the 1986 edition of the final, the Coupe de France trophy was the club's 1st after over 8 agonizing tries and their first since 1941.
In 1987, Bordeaux won the cup again in a re-match with Marseille, Bordeaux won its second consecutive and capped off the decade during the 1986–87 season by winning their fourth league title.
