The Champions League (also known as UEFA Champions League and formerly known as the European Cup) is an annual football cup competition for the top football clubs in Europe. The final of the Champions League Cup competition is the most watched annual sporting event worldwide with more than 100 million television viewers worldwide.

The Champions League consists of several stages with the first being three three knockout qualifying rounds and a play-off round that begins in mid-July; from the first stage, only the top 10 teams will advance to the Champions League group stage.

In the UEFA Champions League group stage there are 8 groups; each group has four member teams. Out of the 32 teams that compete in the group stage, 16 will advance to the knockout stage whice ends with the final match in May between the remaining two teams. The winner the UEFA Champions League final match qualifies for the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Until 2010, the Champions League title was won by 21 different clubs; twelve of those clubs won the title more than once. The Spanish Real Madrid holds the record with winning the title for more than 8 times.

As an international competition, the Champions League has a huge television audience all over the world. The champions League matches are broadcast in over 80 countries and watched by more than 100 million people.

As a commercial entity, UEFA awards the teams which compete in the Champions League tournament with prize money. Each team that qualifies for the UEFA Champions League is awarded with €3,000,000. Each team that participates in the group stage is awarded with €2,400,000. When a team wins in the campaign, it is entitled to a €800,000 reward; if a match ends with a draw, the reward is €400,000.

Each team that reaches the quarter finals is awarded with €2,500,000, Each team that reaches the semi-finals is awarded with €3,000,000. Runners-up are awarded with €4,000,000 and the title winning team is awarded with €7,000,000.
