Man City striker Adebayor takes fresh aim at Arsenal

Emmanuel Adebayor
Manchester City
Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor has made a new taunt at former club Arsenal.
Adebayor reckons a good run in the Premier League will confirm that they are leaving the Gunners in the shade – even though he spoke about leaving City towards the end of the transfer window.
When asked if he felt like he was playing for a bigger club than Arsenal, Adebayor replied: “Yeah, it does feel like that.
“With the great new players we’ve got we have a wonderful chance to make history.
“But it’s all about results. If we can win ten games in a row, people will class Manchester City as bigger than Arsenal.”

Man City striker Adebayor stands by controversial Arsenal goal celebrations

Emmanuel Adebayor
Robin Van Persie
Manchester City
Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor has defended his controversial goal celebrations against Arsenal last season.
Adebayor, 26, is in the bad books with many Arsenal fans following his infamous length-of-the-field goal celebration when he scored against the Gunners last season.
He apologised but was banned for three games after being found guilty of violent conduct for kicking former team-mate Robin van Persie in the face.
The celebration brought a £25,000 fine and a suspended two-match ban.
However, in an interview for the October edition of FHM magazine, there is little in the way of an apology.
He just says he was giving City fans what they wanted and they love him for it.
“It’s because I showed the fans my hunger, passion and I showed my love for the club,” he said. "Ultimately, the fans just want to see that and feel it inside their bodies.”

Stoke boss Pulis silent on Wenger escaping FA rap

Arsene Wenger
Stoke City
Stoke City manager Tony Pulis has declined to comment on the FA’s decision not to charge Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger following his controversial comments about City defenders Ryan Shawcross and Robert Huth.
Wenger, lamenting the lack of protection being given to players in today’s game, had said: “It is more rugby on the goalkeepers than football.
When you see the way Shawcross kicked Heurelho Gomes, how Robert Huth pushed Gomes in the goal, you cannot say that is football anymore.”

Ex-Arsenal boss Graham says Wenger needs to get serious about keeper dilemma
Arsenal
Arsene Wenger
Fulham
Former Arsenal boss George Graham says Arsene Wenger needs to get serious about solving his goalkeeping dilemma.
Graham was the Gunners boss who broke the British transfer record for a goalie when signing David Seaman for £1.3million in 1990.
Seaman spent 13 years at Arsenal, a cornerstone of the club’s pursuit of honours, and of the resolute defence Wenger inherited in 1996.
Graham’s policy was to pay for the best and then let him get on with the job.
Wenger spent this summer courting Fulham veteran Mark Schwarzer – but still no deal got done.
Graham told the Sunday Mirror: “Arsene has the money, so why not go and spend £10m or £12m on a real top-quality keeper? I don’t really understand why he has not done that.
“I mean, Schwarzer is 37 and that seems to go against Arsene’s policy of recruiting players of that age.”

Arsenal captain Cesc: Barcelona did everything to sign me
Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas has spoken of Barcelona's public pursuit of him over the summer.
Cesc says there was no way he was going to go against Arsenal after they asked him to stay.
"Barcelona made every effort to sign me, but Arsenal had told me to stay, which in no way I was going to refuse, and in the end I had to stay," Cesc told Publico.
On his future, Cesc added: "What happens in the future? we'll see," he added. "I do not think of anything because if I think of the future it would not let me focus on the present and I would have a bad year."

Ex-Arsenal No1 Lukic: Wenger has keeper transfer plans all wrong
Arsenal
Arsene Wenger
Barcelona
Liverpool
Former Arsenal No1 John Lukic says Arsene Wenger's team could be found out after failing to sign a new goalkeeper.
Lukic fears Wenger has his keeper priorities all wrong.
He explained to the Sunday Mirror: “There’s an old saying that you don’t win the championship with a bad goalie. I’m not saying Manuel Almunia is bad – but the really top keepers do win games for you.
“The game fans won’t remember is the home match where the opposition got through once and the goalie made a critical save. That save affects the balance of the game, and could win the three points that make you champions.
“I joined Arsenal in 1983 and left in 1990 when David arrived. So between us we spent around 20 years as the Arsenal goalie. How many keepers have been used since David (Seaman) moved on in 2003?”
Lukic went on: “The pursuit of a veteran like Schwarzer suggests that Arsene does still believe his long-term goalie will emerge from inside the club.
“He’s looking for a short-term fix, with Lukasz Fabianski or Wojciech Szczesny eventually taking over.
“You have to be absolutely convinced that the youngster is good enough to do that.
“Given that Arsenal haven’t won a trophy for five years do you really want to be working on a development programme?
“Personally, I’d look for a goalie in his late twenties with a proven track record and put him straight into the team.
“Pepe Reina at Liverpool is an interesting one. The dust hasn’t settled at Anfield yet and he would be a great capture for Arsenal. He’s in the right age group, knows the Premier League, and has a wealth of experience.
“I’d also look at Inter Milan’s Julio Cesar and Victor Valdes at Barcelona.
“Getting either of them may be a tall order, but you have to check out any potential availability and the status of their contracts.
“The key is for Arsenal to find the best man, get him in their team and nail the position down for years.”

Fiorentina fear Arsenal interest unsettling Montolivo
Fiorentina have concerns over losing Arsenal target Riccardo Montolivo.
The Viola had been set to sign a contract extension with their captain when he suddenly pulled out of talks to think things over.
That may well be due to reported interest from the likes of Inter and Arsenal.
“I repeat that we have no intention of losing the player, especially as we have never received any offers for him,” director of sport Pantaleo Corvino told Sky Sport Italia.
“We believed in his qualities right from when he was a kid and because we trust in his future, we offered a five-year contract extension.
“His agent has made certain requests of an economic nature over the last few days.”
Birmingham and Larsson try again for new contract
Midfielder Sebastian Larsson and Birmingham have re-opened talks with over a new contract.
Larsson has been involved in negotiations which first opened two years ago following their relegation from the Barclays Premier League.
The Sweden international could not make his mind up on his future even after City returned to the top flight.
As a result Blues took up a 12-month option on his current contract which will run out next summer.
If the two sides cannot reach an agreement, then Larsson will be free to talk to interested parties in January and possibly sign a pre-contract agreement.
The 25-year-old's representatives met with Birmingham's acting chairman Peter Pannu on Thursday.
The former Arsenal player has said on several occasions in the past that he would prefer to remain at St Andrews.

Australia lead the way in punishing diving
Fifa are prepared to give individual associations the power to hand out punishments for diving.
It is widely agreed that the best way in which to do this would be to offer the threat of suspension to those contemplating bending the rules.
Fifa have given their backing to the cause, with each nation now free to impose bans under their own disciplinary rules.
The Australian Football Federation (FFA) are the first to implement these regulations, with two players recently sanctioned for diving in order to win penalties.
FFA spokesman Rod Allen said: "We deem diving as a serious issue in the game and something we feel strongly about.
"We hope that with serious sanction it will be a deterrent. We want to stamp it out."
The FFA claim to have modelled their new disciplinary regulations on those of Uefa, who charged Arsenal striker Eduardo with 'deceiving the referee' during a UEFA Champions contest with Celtic last year.
The Croatian striker later won an appeal against the ban he received, but Allen is confident the initiative will work in the long run.
"It is a misconduct charge for the players - our regulations allow our match review panel to right wrongs they see that happened on the pitch."
In Australia, if the incident in question leads to a major disadvantage for the other team, such as a converted penalty, then the guilty parties face two-week bans.

Fiorentina
Arsenal have been alerted to news that Riccardo Montolivo has broke off new contract talks with Fiorentina.
The Viola captain is highly admired by Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger and attracted an approach over the summer.
Last night, Montolivo’s agent Giovanni Branchini said: “First things first, I want to say that I have already spoken with Pantaleo Corvino with regard to what was said in a Press Conference on Wednesday.
“I respect him in his role as a director. I think that there are promises owed to the correctness of relationships, which have always been at a high level between us, both cordial and respectful in their nature.
“Corvino’s joke was to show the closeness between the two sides. The Viola’s director of sport referred to meetings that took place in April when we spoke and didn’t find an agreement at the first attempt.
“Now the situation has changed under certain aspects, even if Riccardo’s desire is that of renewing his contract with Fiorentina.
“However, for the moment, the player only wants to wait before taking a definitive decision. The financial aspect doesn’t figure in any of this. He only wants time before tying himself to Fiorentina for the rest of his career.
“There are no doubts about his attachment to the purple shirt,” he concluded.
